Primary groups are people that are close to you that can provide emotional support, encourage conformity, and socialize where as secondary groups are goal-oriented and doesn't provide emotional support or intense loyalty. An example of a primary group are my best friends because we are all loyal to each other, have the same interests, and provide support for each other. An example of a secondary group are my classmates because we are all goal-oriented, either to get our work done or have a good grade in the class.
Primary relationships are interactions that are intimate, personal, caring, and fulfilling. Secondary relationships are impersonal interactions involving limited parts of personalities. An example of a primary relationship is my gym posse where we all work together to make sure we are doing something safe where as the other people at the gym that I acknowledge but aren't close to is an example of a secondary relationship.
Reference groups are groups used for self-evaluation and the formation of attitudes, values, beliefs, and norms. An example of a reference group are some of the students at school that use drugs/drink alcohol, which I don't associate with, however leading me into in-groups and out-groups. An in-group I am a part of is the straightedge community, usually found at the shows I attend where we stay above the influence and some such as myself go as far as being a vegan or vegetarian. An out-group, typically would be the students that distribute and use drugs.
Social exchange is a voluntary action performed in the expectation of getting a reward in return. An example would be training people at the gym since people always ask me to train them I started to wonder what I could get in return for dedicating my time to these people. Conformity is behavior that matches group expectations. An example would be how my best friends and I all like the same music, all attend shows, dress similarly, and act similarly. Cooperation is where an individual or groups combine their efforts to reach a goal. An example would be Key Club, since I am a part of the club and I am always volunteering in local events.
